Before
As a photo editor at O, Melanie Chambers frequently gets asked to model for the magazine’s photo shoots. She polishes her nails diligently once a week, but the results aren’t always worthy of a close-up shot. The manicurist Roseann Singleton took Melanie through the process of applying Roseann’s finely honed technique. To begin, consider a rich purple instead of her usual pinks, which will stand out more against her light complexion.
1. File Your Nails
Ensure that they are totally devoid of moisture (filing wet nails can cause splitting). Always appear your most exquisite with nails that are rounded, much like the form of your cuticle, and that reach just beyond the edge of your fingertip.
2. Soak Your Nails
Apply a thick hand cream on your hands. After that, soak your fingernails or toenails for five minutes in warm, soapy water to soften the cuticles. (If you want to play with your iPad or go through a magazine, you’ll need to do it with one hand at a time.)
3. Push Back Your Cuticles
Use a damp nail stone to push your cuticles back into place. If you don’t have a hangnail, you shouldn’t clip your cuticles; only do so if you have one (they protect nails from infection).
4. Apply a Basecoat
It makes the color go on more evenly and stays vibrant for a longer time. Consider use the OPI Natural Nail Base Coat. Alternately, you might use Essie’s Ridge Filling Base Coat if your nails have ridges. 4. Apply a Basecoat to the Surface
5. Brush On Two Coats Of Color
Apply two very light coats of color with a paintbrush, pausing for a few minutes between each application. To prevent chipping, apply polish to each nail with three separate strokes: first on either side of the nail, then in a sweep over the very tip.
6. Apply a Top Coat
Singleton is a fan of CND Air Dry, a product that speeds up the drying process. Remember to do the same thing with the top coat that you did with the color, which is to swipe it across the top of each nail.
7. Clean Up Any Smudges
Using an orange stick that has been wrapped in a thin layer of cotton and dipped in nail paint remover, you may remove any color that has spread beyond the edges of your nails.
